The Second Ward Democrats endorse Cortez Patton, who grew up in Point Breeze and experienced his brother being murdered when he was 13. He was mentored by Council President Kenyatta Johnson and involved in volunteer work in Municipal Court. At Drexel law school, Cortez created a project to represent single fathers in Family Court. For 9 years, he has worked as chief counsel to Representative Anthony Williams, primarily on criminal justice reform and is working on re-entry issues right now. Cortez helped write a bill on reforming probation and is very conscious of how to best work with pro se litigants. He understands the Municipal Court systems well and has shown excellent reasoning on reform issues. Cortez would be a good addition to the Court.
