The 2nd Ward Democrats endorse incumbent Mark Squilla for City Council in the first councilmanic district. First elected to city council in 2011, Mark Squilla has been a steadfast representative for his community and highly responsive to the needs of his constituents. A community activist and worker’s rights advocate, he was a strong supporter of Fair Workweek and the Construction Impact Tax to fund affordable housing construction, and he introduced, and was able to pass, a transformative bill that raised the minimum wage for city contractors to $15 an hour. He has also supported City Council’s Neighborhood Preservation Initiative, set to build 1,000 affordable homes in Philadelphia. Squilla will continue to support legislative efforts to strengthen the communities of the 2nd Ward.
