The Second Ward Democratic Committee resoundingly endorses Helen Gym for the next Mayor of Philadelphia. Gym represents Philadelphia’s best chance of becoming a safer, healthier, cleaner, greener, more prosperous, and more just city, in all of our neighborhoods. As an experienced teacher turned community organizer and as a councilwoman, Gym has demonstrated tenacity and imagination in bringing solutions to our city, using her talent for building and working with coalitions to bring different populations together. She has repeatedly shown her commitment to support and strengthen our neighborhood schools and libraries, to reform our juvenile and criminal justice systems, to provide decent and affordable housing and comprehensive healthcare to all of our residents. She advocates to strengthen and extend public transportation and to eliminate discrimination and intolerance in public and private spaces. She believes in our collective ability to transform the city for the better and is committed to a vibrant and comprehensive municipal green deal.

Her record as a councilperson is impressive. As COVID swept Philadelphia, she introduced a mandatory eviction diversion law which became a model for the country. She introduced and passed Fair Work legislation which created baseline rights for service workers enforced by a newly created municipal Department of Labor, and more recently successfully pushed to renegotiate the one-sided benefits of the City’s real estate tax abatement. In these dangerous times, Gym’s vision and voice is unique among the candidates, and offers the best promise of a better city, perhaps even a model for others. And of course Philadelphia history will be made the night of her election.
